Luggage

When packing your suitcases keep the idea of comfort in mind, other than the required sun protection we advise light natural fibre clothing, skirts and long trousers for the evenings when the insects come out. Remember that you are going to a natural and almost untouched environment which blossoms in all its aspects! A comfortable pair of walking shoes, sandals for the beach and a jumper for cooler evenings are also recommended.

Bank

The official currency is the Ariary which has displaced the Madagascan Franc (Fmg). However a large part of the populace primarily stall holders still work with the Madagascan Franc (Fmg). The exchange rate is approximately 2700 Ar to 1 €. Banks are located in Hell Ville where it is possible to exchange or withdraw money.

Credit Cards are rarely used and not always accepted even in hotels and shops.

Tips

Most places keep a communal tip box to be divided among all the staff, not just those who have direct contact with the clientele. It worth remembering that the average monthly salary in Madagascar is approx € 40, it is recommended that tipping is kept in proportion to the salary.

Health

All tourist accommodations have a level of cleanliness proportionate to prices and rating. It is however advisable to drink sealed bottled water.

Anti malaria injections are only recommended here, specifically during humid periods, unlike other African countries where it is obligatory. A mosquito protection cream will assist when relaxing during evenings passed on the sea shore.

Even though there are chemists on the island a small travelling first aid kit is recommended.

Flights

Air France has weekly flights throughout the year to Antananarivo, the capital of Madagascar. As of 2006 Air Madagascar runs direct flights from Milan Malpensa to Nosy Be. National flights between Antananarivo and Nosy Be run daily.

Visa

A tourist visa which lasts for one month can be obtained on arrival in Madagascar and it's free. For more than one month its costs approximately 62 €.

Accommodation

Don’t forget

Other than the considerations mentioned to date, we would recommend that you bring with you the following items; shampoo, sun cream, camera film, tapes for filming, batteries, insect cream etc. While it is possible to buy these products on the island the price is distinctly “ tourists ” only.

Don’t forget to check your passport, tickets and visa. Make sure you avail of the wonderful hand crafts in wood, musical instruments, embroidered cloth, fossils, and local jewellery.

Meals

Here you can find several restaurants with both ethnic and local cuisine, and at little expense you can eat your preference. We are available to assist you with recommendations and addresses. After dinner, the many bars on and near the beach front are welcoming and offer a friendly atmosphere in which to pass the evening.

Night life is as diverse as the island itself and for those who enjoy all types of dancing there are a variety of places for you to go from the rhythms of live local music to discos the choice is yours.
