WHAT TO KNOW
Luggage
When packing your suitcases
keep the idea of comfort in mind, other than the required sun protection
we advise light natural fibre clothing, skirts and long trousers for
the evenings when the insects come out. Remember that you are going
to a natural and almost untouched environment which blossoms in all
its aspects! A comfortable pair of walking shoes, sandals for the beach
and a jumper for cooler evenings are also recommended.
Bank
The official currency
is the Ariary which has displaced the Madagascar Franc (Fmg). However
a large part of the populace primarily stall holders still work with
the Madagascar Franc (Fmg). The exchange rate is approximately 2500
Ar to 1 €. Banks are located in Hell Ville where it is possible
to exchange or withdraw money.
Credit Cards are rarely
used and not always accepted even in hotels and shops.
Tips
Most
places keep a communal tip box to be divided among all the staff, not
just those who have direct contact with the clientele. It worth remembering
that the average monthly salary in Madagascar is approx € 50, it
is recommended that tipping is kept in proportion to the salary.
Health
All tourist accommodations
have a level of cleanliness proportionate to prices and rating. It is
however advisable to drink sealed bottled water.
Anti malaria injections
are only recommended here, specifically during humid periods, unlike
other African countries where it is obligatory. A mosquito protection
cream will assist when relaxing during evenings passed on the sea shore.
Even though there are
chemists on the island a small travelling first aid kit is recommended.
Flights
Air France has weekly flights throughout the year to Antananarivo, the
capital of Madagascar. As of 2006 Air Madagascar runs direct flights
from Paris to Nosy Be. National flights between Antananarivo and Nosy
Be run daily.
Visa
A
tourist visa which lasts for one month can be obtained on arrival in
Madagascar and it's free. For more than one month its costs approximately
62 €.
Accommodation
Manta
works with some of the best hotels on the Island, among which are :
Kintana
Hotel, Arc En Ciel Hotel, Explora Village e Le Zahir Lodge;
as well as other forms of accommodation such as private villas and bungalows
: Chez Alex and Villa Calipso, ecc.
Don’t forget
Other than the considerations
mentioned to date, we would recommend that you bring with you the following
items; shampoo, sun cream, camera film, tapes for filming, batteries,
insect cream etc. While it is possible to buy these products on the
island the price is distinctly “ tourists ” only.
Don’t forget to
check your passport, tickets and visa. Make sure you avail of the wonderful
hand crafts in wood, musical instruments, embroidered cloth, fossils,
and local jewellery.
Meals
Here
you can find several restaurants with both ethnic and local cuisine,
and at little expense you can eat your preference. We are available
to assist you with recommendations and addresses. After dinner, the
many bars on and near the beach front are welcoming and offer a friendly
atmosphere in which to pass the evening.
